UK Amplifies Child Protection Measures in Online Safety Bill Amidst Tech Industry Scrutiny

The United Kingdom has bolstered safeguards in its Online Safety Bill to shield minors from accessing explicit content, according to an announcement made on Friday. This is part of an amendment to the highly anticipated legislation which the tech sector is keenly monitoring.

With the most recent modifications following discussions in the parliament, the UK aims to enforce more stringent criteria for age authentication mechanisms used by platforms that host or permit adult content. The intention is to ascertain the efficacy of these mechanisms in determining if a user is underage.

Like the European Union and other nations, the UK is seeking ways to safeguard the users of social media, especially the younger population, from detrimental material while maintaining freedom of expression.

The revised legislation also intends to make senior executives personally accountable for ensuring the safety of minors on their platforms. This move comes after the government agreed to stiffen the bill earlier this year by considering incarceration for the heads of technology companies.

Paul Scully, the minister overseeing technology and digital economy, emphasized, “This administration is resolute in not permitting the well-being of our young ones to be compromised during their internet activities, be it through facing harassment or being exposed to detrimental material that could have a catastrophic effect on their lives.”

“To avert any more calamities and pave the way for a brighter tomorrow for our young ones, we are taking assertive and prompt action to make the Online Safety Bill a global exemplar in safeguarding our children,” he added.

Additional adjustments to the legislation will empower regulatory bodies to access information regarding a minor’s social media activity if a coroner demands it. This could assist grieving families in comprehending if online activities had any role in their child’s demise.

Companies in the tech space, including giants like Apple, have expressed concerns over portions of the Online Safety Bill, especially those that could potentially force messaging services to compromise end-to-end encryption in an effort to detect child exploitation material.

The bill is still undergoing scrutiny and is believed to be months away from being enacted. It is currently in the hands of the House of Lords, the upper chamber of the parliament, where members have the authority to propose modifications before determining its fate.

LiveJasmin Completes Major Financial Systems Upgrade

LiveJasmin has completed a major software and hardware upgrade to its financial systems after several days of technical work that caused a temporary 1–2 day delay in payment processing.

According to company co-founder Karoly Papp, this was the first time in LiveJasmin’s 25 years of operation that the financial period closing had to be postponed.

The company chose to keep its website and services operational throughout the migration rather than taking the platform offline for one or two days. Although users experienced some minor disruptions, the technical team reportedly worked almost around the clock for nearly a week to resolve an unexpected issue and complete the transition.

The migration is now fully completed, and payment processing should return to its normal schedule.

LiveJasmin thanked its technical team for their dedication, as well as its partners and users for their patience and understanding during the upgrade.
