Age Verification Strikes Again: Pornhub Access Cut in Virginia, USA

Virginians are set to lose access to Pornhub, a leading online adult content platform, as the company has elected to suspend service in the state in light of impending legislation slated to commence this Saturday.

The forthcoming statute mandates that adult content platforms employ sophisticated age verification tools to rigorously ascertain if an individual is at least 18 years of age before granting access. The bill was championed in the General Assembly earlier in March, with an overwhelming majority of lawmakers giving it their support. Sen. Bill Stanley, a Republican from Franklin, who introduced the bill, communicated to the Mercury that the purpose of this legislative measure is to curb the “crisis” of minors being exposed to explicit content.

The statute stipulates that platforms have an obligation to authenticate the age and identity of their users, albeit they have the discretion to choose the mode of verification. This could encompass the submission of official identification documents or resort to alternative proprietary technology.

However, Pornhub disputes the efficacy of this legislative approach in safeguarding visitors to its platform, positing that it potentially compromises the safety of minors and the privacy of users.

“We have taken the tough call to suspend access to our platform in Virginia until a pragmatic solution is brought to the table,” reads a statement from Pornhub.

With this development, Virginia becomes the second state after Utah, which also enforces an analogous age verification rule, where residents are denied access to Pornhub due to statutory constraints.
