Pornhub Blocks Access in Utah Ahead of Age Verification Law

In response to growing calls to verify the ages of online users, Utah has passed a law requiring pornographic websites to verify the age of users each time they use the website or potentially face lawsuits. Starting on Tuesday, Utah residents attempting to access Pornhub were greeted with a message arguing that the law will put privacy at risk, featuring adult film actress Cherie DeVille. Similar laws have been passed in Louisiana, Mississippi and Virginia, and starting from 2024, Utah will also require social media companies to verify the age of users and block those who don’t provide it.

Critics of these age verification systems argue that they are a form of surveillance, creating an internet where our private data is collected and sold by default. While these systems may restrict the access of children to certain websites, there are still questions as to whether they are effective in protecting users from viewing pornographic content, and how they will affect online privacy and freedom of speech.
