Supreme Court Rejects Appeal from Sex Trafficking Victims, Upholding Reddit’s Protection from Liability
The US Supreme Court unsuccessfully received an appeal from victims of child pornography who accused Reddit Inc. of abetting and profiting from images of child sexual mistreatment.
It has become the latest successful defense for the nation’s most extensive social media platforms, which benefit from immunity from the bulk of litigation over online opinions by virtue of a liability umbrella called Section 230. Recently, the Supreme Court refused to inhibit the encompassing defense for platforms like Twitter Inc., Facebook Inc. and Alphabet Inc.’s Google.

Strategy by the 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals confirmed Reddit’s safeguard by Section 230 as the victims of abuse were unable to prove Reddit was conscious of the happenings on its platform.
This happened due to the 1998 Amendment of Section 230, called Allow States and Victims to Fight Online Sex Trafficking Act, or FOSTA, which permitted the victims to sue Reddit for the images of their maltreatment. In spite of this, the arguments of the victims failed to show Reddit had deliberately engineered its social channel where child pornography prevailed.
The Supreme Court suspended taking the Reddit case while it solved two distinct social media cases in early May. As for the cases, the court did not change Section 230, thus safeguarding Google and Twitter from legal responsibility for terrorist material on their websites.
The court’s current hesitance in dealing with the tricky Section 230 statute has laid the foundations for the advanced internet.
Social media providers have firmly supported Section 230 as a crucial protection from theoretical millions of dollars in lawsuits due to completely unacceptable and damaging online speech. However, lawmakers recently wondered whether Section 230 is much too extensive and defends digital mediums from culpability for the wrongs they allowed.
