Child Sexual Assault in Virtual Reality Raises Alarm

A recent virtual reality sexual assault case highlights the increasing risks technology poses to children. William Ethan Craddock, 21, is accused of assaulting a 7-year-old girl using a virtual reality headset in Montgomery County, Texas. Arrested last September, he faces charges of super aggravated sexual assault of a child, a serious felony.

The incident came to light when the child’s mother, upon returning from a swim meet, discovered her son distressed and found graphic evidence of the assault on his Xbox. The victim had been watching cartoons before the attack. Authorities, after obtaining a search warrant for the Xbox, identified Craddock, the child’s babysitter, as the suspect.

Cybersecurity experts are raising alarms about virtual reality technology, cautioning that it opens doors for hackers and predators. An Ofcom study reported one in five children use the internet late at night, increasing exposure to online risks. Parents are increasingly worried about online bullying and inappropriate content.

Originally developed in the 1960s for artists and architects, virtual reality technology has become mainstream in gaming and entertainment. It’s also gaining popularity for sexual services. A study from Macquarie University suggests it could aid in treating men with uncontrollable sexual urges.
