Reddit’s New Guidelines Embrace ‘Simpsons’ Adult Content

The social networking site Reddit has now given the green light to the sharing of artificial intelligence-generated adult content, provided it is centered on fictional characters.

On Wednesday, Reddit rolled out a modification to its community guidelines, explaining that sexually explicit material involving real individuals is strictly forbidden. This also encompasses pornographic content featuring people, if uploaded without their authorization. However, the ban doesn’t hold for “AI-created erotic media that portrays fictional personalities or characters.”

Especially, it was mentioned that fan-made erotic artworks of cartoons and anime—a term initially coined in Japan for animations—are allowed to be freely distributed on the platform. This entails that intimate scenes involving characters from The Simpsons or Scooby Doo are acceptable.

Prior to this alteration in policy, there was ambiguity regarding the permissibility of cartoon adult content, although specialized subreddits flourished without obstruction. The revised guidelines elucidate that such erotic illustrations are now officially permissible.

The phenomenon colloquially known as Rule 34, which amusingly declares, “if something exists, there’s an adult version of it,” has been around nearly as long as the internet has been globally accessible, and this adage has mostly held true.

In the past, creating this type of content demanded the dedication of an ardent fan, but with the rise of consumer-grade AI creation tools, the production process has been substantially streamlined. Conversely, a segment of users has exploited this technology to depict real-life persons in salacious scenarios.

The surge in deepfake adult content, featuring unsuspecting celebrities, has gained traction in recent times. As a response, various platforms, including Reddit, have been striving to eradicate this practice from their services.

Supreme Court to Review Texas Porn Law

The US Supreme Court has agreed to hear a case challenging Texas Bill 1181, a law requiring age verification and health warnings for pornography websites. Enacted in September 2023, the law mandates age verification for sites with sexually explicit content comprising at least one-third of their material. Acceptable methods include state IDs or commercial age verification systems.

Intended to prevent minors’ access to pornography, the law defines harmful material as sexually explicit content lacking serious value for minors. Non-compliant websites face penalties of up to $10,000 per day and $250,000 if a minor accesses pornography.

The Fifth Circuit upheld the age verification requirement but blocked the health warnings. Free Speech Coalition’s executive director, Alison Boden, stated, “We look forward to defending the rights of all Americans to access the internet privately and free from surveillance.”
